Gujarat Assembly session begins today; 182 MLAs to join 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' plantation drive

Gandhinagar, Sep 9 (SocialNews.XYZ) The Gujarat Legislative Assembly’s three-day ninth session will begin on Wednesday, with all 182 MLAs expected to join a tree plantation drive at the Secretariat as part of the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign, adding an environmental programme to the opening day of the legislative sitting.

The plantation programme will be held at the premises, opposite the statue of Mahatma Gandhi, after the inauguration of the advanced disaster management facility ‘BHISHM Cube’.

Assembly Speaker Shankar Chaudhary, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, members of the Council of Ministers and all 182 MLAs have been invited to participate.

The ninth session of the 15th Gujarat Legislative Assembly is scheduled from September 9 to 11.

The dates were revised last month, with the Governor cancelling the earlier summons for September 8-10 and issuing a fresh summons for September 9-11. The three-day duration remains unchanged.

The Business Advisory Committee had earlier discussed the scheduling of Bills and the order in which they would be taken up during the session.

Government spokesperson Jitu Vaghani said the meeting was held under the chairmanship of Speaker Shankar Chaudhary in the presence of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Rushikesh Patel, Finance Minister Kanu Desai, senior minister Kunvarji Bavaliya, Congress legislature party leader Tushar Chaudhary and deputy leader Shailesh Parmar.

According to Vaghani, the committee discussed the proposed legislative business as well as condolence references for former and serving legislators who had died.

The Bills listed for consideration include the Gujarat Agricultural Universities Amendment Bill, 2026 (Bill No. 10); Natural Farming Science University Amendment Bill, 2026 (Bill No. 21); Gujarat Rent Bill, 2026 (Bill No. 22); and the Gujarat Livestock Feed, Poultry, Grain and Mineral Mixture Production, Storage, Distribution, Sale and Quality Control Regulation Bill, 2026 (Bill No. 23).

The remaining Bills are the Gujarat Land Revenue Amendment Bill, 2026 (Bill No. 24); Gujarat Prevention of Fragmentation and Consolidation of Agricultural Land Amendment Bill, 2026 (Bill No. 25); Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Amendment Bill, 2026 (Bill No. 26); Gujarat Ease of Doing Business Bill, 2026 (Bill No. 27); and Gujarat Goods and Services Amendment Bill, 2026 (Bill No. 28).

Vaghani said some of the proposed legislation were amendment Bills while others were new Bills. "The final sequence and timing would be announced by the Speaker in the House," he said.

The tree plantation drive is part of the third phase of the nationwide ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign.

The initiative was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on World Environment Day in 2024 to encourage people to plant trees in the name of their mothers and in honour of Mother Earth.

The campaign has since continued through successive phases, with the 2026-27 programme setting plantation targets across states.

The programme is intended to strengthen participation in the campaign and the broader objective of increasing green cover and encouraging environmental conservation.
